Themal, CA—Basketball is back, and the Yellowjackets start this year’s campaign on the road against the Desert Mirage Rams. Both boys and girls teams traveled to Thermal for the early season road match-up, and both came out victorious. The boys team won 79-28, and the girls nearly shut out their opposition, 56-2.

For the Lady Yellowjackets, they were led in scoring by sophomore Savannah Govea, picking up where she left off from last year’s playoffs with 14 points. She also contributed 8 steals on the defensive end. Also making strong contributions on the offensive side were Emely Rodriguez and Madison Prieto, both of whom dropped in 6 points.

“Tonight was a great way to kick off the season,” said head coach Keisha Young. “The girls did a great job of working together and communicating with each other.”

For the boys, they were led by Devin Torrez with 17 points. Aaron Valencia added 14, 12 of which he scored in the first half. New addition to the squad, Patrick Angulo was a marksman from outside, putting up 16 points, including an 11 point explosion in the opening quarter.

Head coach Kendrick Ayres was satisfied with his team’s play tonight. “We got off to a hot start shooting the ball,” he said. “As a team we controlled the game defensively. Notably, Josiah Diggs and Aaron Valencia both had solid rebounding and defensive efforts.”

Tomorrow the Yellowjackets open their home schedule for the new season. The boys will face Sherman Indian at 4:00 PM, and the boys will take on Palmdale Academy at 5:30 PM.
