Football celebrates playoff success with lunchtime rally
ASB hosts short rally to celebrate team and hype school up for first quarterfinal playoff appearance in over a decade
Colton, CA—With the Yellowjacket football team about to play in the school’s first CIF quarterfinal game in 12 years, the school had to do something to hype up both the players and fans. Yesterday, ASB hosted a small pep rally during both lunches to get students excited for the second round of the CIF playoffs.
The short rally featured speeches by the team’s captains, performances by the CHS drumline and cheer squad, as well as a game of musical chairs.
Between lunches, the football team was treated to pizza and other treats provided by the football boosters and Golden Pizza and Wings.
With the Yellowjackets dramatic playoff victory against Cerritos High last Friday night, ASB had to find a way to celebrate. ASB Director Alexandra Buskirk shared, “As soon as last week’s game was done, I thought ‘what can we do to celebrate this week?'”
Although there couldn’t be something big like a full pep rally on short notice, they came to an agreement with school administration to host a smaller “rally” during both lunches.
For the players, this small event was validation for a year that had several ups and downs. Receiver Ja’len Terry shared the importance of making it to the playoffs. “We definitely proved a lot of people wrong this year. We made it after all the other obstacles we went through. We definitely were here. So really proud of my guys.”
For a quick rally, the end result was a success, much like the team it celebrated. “The rally is an amazing experience for everyone here at Colton High School,” said cheerleader Denise Lupian. “I think everyone just likes to have the spirit and keep the Colton community alive.”
Colton High’s CIF quarterfinal game against number 1 ranked Bishop Montgomery will be held at Memorial Stadium tonight at 7pm. Tickets are available on GoFan, $10 for general admission and $5 for children under 12 accompanied by an adult. Cash tickets will not be sold at the gate.
Recently, the CHS Publications Department experienced a major theft as over $20,000 in photography equipment was stolen from our studio over Spring Break. This included all cameras. Any amount you donate will help rebuild our program. Thank you!
