Benjamin Velarde takes on Mt. Sac during game 2 of the Yellowjackets PlayVS matchup.

Colton, CA—The #17 ranked Yellowjacket eSports team met their match during week 5 of the PlayVS season on Wednesday, losing to #16 Mt. Sac Early College Academy Wolves 2-0. This drops their record to 2-2 on the season as they find themselves playing tougher teams each week.

Starting this week for the Yellowjackets were Lucas Duran, Benjamin Velarde, and Samuel Duran. Due to the best of 3 format for the competition, Samuel did not see any arena action in the “Super Smash Brothers” game play.

Lucas Duran was first up against an opponent with the user name “god.” Duran chose Donkey Kong as his character to face off against Joker from the “Persona 5” game. The match started off evenly, going back and forth as the two kept playing to their character’s strengths. Eventually, Lucas made a couple grievous errors and found himself on the losing end, dropping two games to his Mt. Sac opponent.

That brought up Benjamin Velarde, the only player on the team yet to be beaten in competition this year. That changed with this match, as his main Little Mac was overmatched by Incineroar from “Pokémon.”

Colton struggled this week, but are continuing to grow and build their tournament skills. Week 6 play starts next week at 4 p.m. in room 503.
