The National Weather Service has declared an excessive heat warning for San Bernardino county this week. Several Colton teams have been impacted by the consequences.

Colton, CA—In case no one has noticed, it is hot as “you know what” out there right now.

Thanks to the 100-degree plus heatwave Colton is dealing with this week, several athletic events have been either canceled or rescheduled.

The team that has been impacted the hardest has been the ladies’ tennis team. All three of their matches this week—against San Bernardino, Liberty, and Pacific—have been canceled. Unlike volleyball, which plays indoors, and football, which plays in the evening after sunset, the tennis team plays during the hottest part of the day.

Senior tennis player Lesly Yanez is frustrated about the cancellations, which has devastated the team’s preseason schedule. “It does seem unfair just because we can reschedule them. Since it is my senior year I was looking forward to our preseason games.”

Like tennis, freshman football’s Wednesday game against Rosamond was canceled. Unlike tennis, the game was rescheduled for September 21 at 4 p.m.

And for the Cross-Country team, the heat advisory has pushed up the start time for this tomorrow’s SWARM event. Runners will begin races at 7:30 a.m. instead of the originally planned 8:00 a.m. start time.

Within the Arrowhead athletic conference, teams across San Bernardino county are taking this problem into consideration and canceling their games as well.

Colton’s coaches are taking precautions for practice time. While football and volleyball already have later scheduled practices when the heat is reduced, tennis has moved indoors to keep athletes safe from the heat.

Athletics director Jacob Van Hofwegen has important advice for surviving this heat. “It’s important for the kids to be hydrated,” he said. “We can have illness even at 90 degrees.”

According to Accuweather, the heatwave is set to continue through next Friday, with temperatures remaining about the 100-degree mark. While nothing has been made official, more cancellations and postponements may be in the future on the Colton High athletic schedule.
