Shantel Marentes returns to the court for 2022, ready to build upon her excellent 2021 season.

Colton, CA—Women’s tennis opened its 2022 season yesterday afternoon against the visiting Chaffey Tigers. Despite opening day confidence and determination, the visitors served up a crushing 14-4 defeat for the home team.

Across the board, the Yellowjackets struggled. Number one starter Shantel Marentes dropped two of her three sets against the Tigers’ players. And fellow singles starters, Emily Ramirez and Hailey Dubon were swept in straight sets by the visitors.

The doubles teams won three of the total nine sets of play against the Tigers. Kimberly Emilio and Jasmin Almazan continued their strong teamwork from last season to take two sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. And the doubles team of Natalie Diaz and Hazel Ramirez Macias won their set against the Tigers’ top doubles team, 7-5.

With the game day coming to a close head coach Omar Menjivar had a few words of wisdom for his team: “Since it’s our first game of the season, it’s not about the outcome, it’s about the process, and hopefully this pre-season match gets us ready for regular league matches.”

The prognosis looks strong, as this year the Yellowjackets are fielding a team of 23 players. The Tigers’ head coach Ricardo Ruiz was excited to see the growth in the program. “It’s good to see they have a lot of players,” he said. “I believe last time we came they didn’t have as many players as this year.”
