Colton, CA—This has been a good week for men’s tennis. The team came into the week with a record including zero wins, and after three consecutive matches against San Gorgonio, Eisenhower, and Kaiser, they have notched two victories in the win column. Today, they defeated the Kaiser Cats 13-5.

Kaiser’s team only included three players, enough players to fill all three starting singles positions. Because of this, no doubles matches were played today, causing Kaiser to forfeit 9 sets.

This gave head coach Omar Menjivar the ability to provide all nine of his players an opportunity to play a singles game. “We’re using this game as an experience,” said Adrian Colunga. “With their team having limited people, we are just trying to improve our game.”

In round 1, Colton started Adrian Colunga, Andrew Diaz, and Jordan Dubon; for round 2, they started Tyler Morales, Joel Matias, and Ja’len Terry; in round 3, they started Anthony Castellanos, Angel Orellana, and Christopher Lopez.

“Felt good trying singles for the first time,” said Anthony Castellanos. “I’ve played doubles all season and it was good to know I could hang in there with the singles.”

In addition to the forfeited sets, Colunga (7-6), Diaz (7-6), Lopez (6-4), and Dubon (6-0) each won their games against Kaiser’s team.

Now the Yellowjackets men’s tennis team gets a few well-earned days off. They return to the court next Tuesday, April 12, to face divisional opponent Jurupa Hills. Tuesday also marks Senior Night 2022 for Joel Matias, who is graduating this year.
