Colton, CA—All the hard work paid off yesterday as the Yellowjacket men’s tennis team got its first taste of victory in the 2022 season. Facing Eisenhower High School in the second of three straight home matchups this week, the Yellowjackets came out and dominated with a 13-5 victory over the Eagles.

Each member of the men’s squad who played scored two or more set victories against Eisenhower. Led by Adrian Colunga on the singles side, who won straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, and the team of Jordan Dubon and Joel Matias on the doubles, who won 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, the Yellowjackets found their confidence and unity.

“For a while now everybody already got a taste of what it is to win individually,” Coach Omar Menjivar shared about the performance. “However, this feeling of win as team is far superior. Our team has learned how much effort each one of us needs to put in.”

The victory could have been even more dominant had Colton fielded a full lineup. For the second straight match, they did not have enough players to field a No. 3 singles player, forfeiting three sets before the match even began.

For the singles, in addition to Colunga’s strong effort, Andrew Diaz played well, winning two of his three sets, 6-2, 6-1, 5-7. He nearly won his third set against Eisenhower’s No. 3, pushing his opponent to an extra game before falling 5-7.

In the doubles division, No. 2 team Angel Orellana and Ja’len Terry continued their improvement, winning two sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, forcing an extra game against Eisenhower’s No. 1 doubles team. The Yellowjacket No. 3 team of Christopher Lopez and Anthony Castellanos left it on the court as they won straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0.

“We hope to continue building upon this win and improving on our skills to put up a better fight against stronger teams,” said coach Menjivar.

Colton gets their chance to continue that fight today in a match against Kaiser High.
