Adrian Colunga smacks a perfect forehand in his 6-0 second set victory against San Gorgonio.

Colton, CA—This season for Colton’s men’s tennis team has been all about learning and growth, and at yesterday’s match against San Gorgonio the team leveled up, almost defeating the Spartans, who won 10-8.

Coach Omar Menjivar was concerned about how the layoff between matches because of the Spring Break would affect his team. “In any sport an extended period of time without playing can affect your game a lot. Especially tennis, being a game of accuracy, its effects are stronger.”

While the team was unable to defeat San Gorgonio due to missing a third player for singles play, which meant forfeiting three sets, the rest of the team came ready to play and fight against the Spartans.

In the singles division, Adrian Colunga continues strengthening his game, taking two of his three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3. Andrew Diaz also won two, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

For the doubles, the team of Anthony Castellanos and Christopher Lopez took two of their three sets, 0-6, 6-2, 6-1. “My biggest improvement is I am able to hit more balls consistently and at the same time keep track of the score,” said Castellanos.

Jordan Dubon and Myles Garza won a set, going 1-6, 4-6, 6-4; and Angel Orellana and Ja’len Terry also took one, going 2-6, 1-6, 6-4. Dubon shared that his improvement with partner Myles Garza is because the two have learned how to “cooperate better” as the season has progressed.

This match was the first of three this week for the Yellowjackets, who face Eisenhower today and Kaiser High tomorrow.
