Bright spots overshadow tough Track loss vs. Kaiser
Abraham Luu, Eddie Marquez, Glory Mgbemere, and Zamantha Moctezuma standout in individual events
Colton, CA—In their first league meet of the 2022 season yesterday, the Yellowjackets faced Skyline opponent Kaiser at home. Dominant performances by some of Kaiser’s top runners propelled the Fontana team to victory in both men’s and women’s varsity.
Kaiser won 73-40 in the men’s varsity competition, and 57-46 in the women’s.
Despite the defeat, several Yellowjacket runners distinguished themselves in both track and field at the meet.
For the men, senior Abraham Luu took first place in the marquee 100 meter dash race, defeating Kaiser’s Zak Afutiti with a time of 12.85. In the 200 meters, Luu was only outshined by Colton’s other speed demon, Eddie Marquez, the two of them taking first and second place. Marquez came in first with a time of 25.82, and Luu finished with 26.44.
Marquez was also stellar in the shotput. With the discus event canceled due to a facilities not meeting CIF standards, the shotput took center stage in the field events. Marquez dominated the field, throwing for 36’5. Colton junior Adam Torres was right behind him in second, throwing 34’1.
In the women’s meet, Glory Mgbemere jumped over her competition in the women’s 100 meter hurdles event, with a time of 20.19. In the 400 meters, Iris Garcia-Zarate won big with a time of 1:06.89, with teammate Alma Vasquez narrowly missing second place with a time of 1:08.99. The women’s 4×400 meter relay team of Diana Vera, Madison Prieto, Brianna Jimenez, and Alma Vasquez took first place with a time of 5:10.19.
Over in the shotput event, the Colton women destroyed Kaiser. Zamantha Moctezuma took first, defeating teammate Leea Palma by two inches, 26’10 to 26’8. Grace Osueke came in third with a distance of 25’1.
Track now gets a week off to train during the Spring Break, then travels to Rialto for their next league meet on March 31.
Recently, the CHS Publications Department experienced a major theft as over $20,000 in photography equipment was stolen from our studio over Spring Break. This included all cameras. Any amount you donate will help rebuild our program. Thank you!
