Colton, CA—Yesterday, the men’s tennis team hosted the crosstown rival Grand Terrace Titans. The result was 15-3, but the results were quite pleasing for head coach Omar Menjivar, who is seeing his team’s growth day-by-day.

“We’re a very young team,” Menjivar said. “Ja’Len Terry, for example, just joined the team yesterday and held a tennis racquet for the first time. He was thrown into the water with the sharks and came out excited about playing tennis and looking forward to getting better.”

In addition to Terry, senior Joel Matias played in his first match. “He played really well and is fully committed to the team for the rest of the season,” Menjivar said.

The remainder of the team was overmatched by the more experienced Titan squad. However, sophomore Adrian Colunga continued showing his progress, taking two of three sets against Grand Terrace’s singles players, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Andrew Castellanos won the team’s only other set, 6-1.

Improvement could be seen across the board. In his match against the number 3 Grand Terrace singles player, Myles Garza lost 6-7, showing resilience.

For the doubles, Jordan Dubon and Christopher Lopez continue working on their chemistry as the new players are added to the rotation. They lost three straight sets, but did so 1-6, 1-6, 3-6.

The Yellowjackets now get a week to practice and prepare for a home match on Mar. 8 against Jurupa Hills.
