Palm Desert, CA—With only two players returning from last year’s team, the young Boys’ Tennis squad faced off against an experienced Coachella Valley club and got its first taste of competition. While they lost the match, 18 sets to none, the Yellowjackets returned to Colton with a better understanding of the game and the promise of their team.

“For me the big story is that we will have a full team this season,” said head coach Omar Menjivar. “Compared to last spring season 2021 we only had three players.” The team brought six players to this match, but as fall sports are ending, and athletes still processing their paperwork, they will soon have more than the league minimum of 9 players.

Returning players Andrew Diaz and Adrian Colunga worked hard in their singles matches against Coachella Valley’s players. Diaz dropped straight sets, 0-6, 4-6, 4-6, as did Colunga, 2-6, 4-6, 2-6.

The remaining four playersChristopher Lopez, Anthony Castellanos, Angel Orillana, and Myles Garzamixed-and-matched as doubles teams. Coach Menjivar is looking to provide them opportunities to find the “energies” that give them the best chance to improve and win.

The team is still looking for players. If you are interested, see Coach Menjivar after school at the tennis courts. You can learn more about getting clearance to play sports by going to the CHS Athletics website.

Boys’ tennis takes to the courts here at CHS next Tuesday, Feb. 22 against Indian Springs. Match time is 3:15 p.m.
