Madison Barrera goes up for a big rebound during the first half of the Yellowjackets’ league tournament matchup against Bloomington High.

Colton, CA—Fresh off their number two seed clinching victory over Rim of the World, it only took a quarter for Colton to rediscover that same fire against Bloomington High.

The crosstown rivals came into Hubbs Gym hoping to spoil Colton’s Skyline League tournament hopes. Instead the Bruin’s season was ended as the Yellowjackets found their shooting touch and buried Bloomington, 56-24.

Madison Barrera continued her all-star play, packing the box score with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 5 steals. Freshman teammates Zoey Espino and Savannah Govea also left their mark on this game, knocking down shots from the perimeter. Govea finished with 10 points and 3 assists.

Espino played her best game of the season, making 4 three-pointers for 12 points, including two in the Yellowjackets’ 22-point second quarter.

The game started slow as both teams were visibly nervous playing in a league tournament game. Turnovers dominated the first quarter, which ended in a 7-7 tie.

Then Colton found the switch and went into overdrive. They outscored Bloomington 22-4 in the second quarter for a 29-11 halftime lead. Barrera scored 9 of her 21 points alone during this stretch, which put the game away.

During the second half, Colton poured it on and cruised to a 32-point victory.

In the Skyline 1-4 matchup, Fontana defeated Rim of the World, 42-26. Colton will travel on Friday evening for the league championship game at Fontana High. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
