Colton, CA—Last night, the girls’ varsity basketball team faced their toughest opponent of the preseason in the Alta Loma Braves, losing 56-18 in front of their home crowd at Hubbs Gym.

Madison Barrera led the Lady Yellowjackets with 12 of the team’s 18 points. She added 11 rebounds, 5 steals, and a blocked shot as she continues to be a force on the lower block. Guards Zoey Espino and Desiree Cadena each added a three-point basket. Emely Rodriguez continued her solid work on the front line, pulling down six rebounds.

However, it wasn’t enough against the more seasoned Alta Loma team, who improved their record to 4-2 on the young season.

Despite the loss, head coach Keisha Owens sees the silver lining. “My girls played more aggressive and together and efficiently tonight than they did the whole preseason,” she said. “If they were to play this way . . . our record would be better than 3-6.”

As Colton heads into its Skyline League schedule starting next week at Rim of the World, it is notable this is the best preseason record the team has posted in six years.
