Colton, CA—”It was a must-win game.”

After the game, junior wing Gabriel Aparicio was excited by his team’s 51-41 home victory over Entrepreneur High School. His 13 points, four rebounds and three assists were part of an excellent team effort by the Yellowjackets.

Coming off blowout losses to Bloomington High and Riverside Prep, the Yellowjackets needed a team effort and that’s what they got. Junior guard Devin Torrez led all scorers with 25 points. Aaron Valenica added seven points and seven rebounds. And sophomore Josiah Diggs contributed three points and five rebounds.

“I feel really good with the effort,” Head coach Kendrick Ayres said post-game. “I’ve been trying to convince all of us to reinforce the message that our strengths is in each other. Relying on each other, working as a unit, not trying to do it individually.”

The Yellowjackets came out focused in the first quarter, taking a 16-11 lead. Entrepreneur fought back to close the half 25-21. However, the game was never in doubt, as the Yellowjackets maintained their focus in the second half as their backcourt kept up the pressure on both offense and defense.

With this victory, Colton now has a 2-3 record as they prepare for a home showdown next week against Desert Mirage High School.

“Got the dub,” Devin Torrez exclaimed after the game. “That’s what we came out for, so we made it happen.”
