NFL starts season with replacement refs, questions

NFL starts season with replacement refs, questions
Otto Greule Jr

NFL season has begun, and no doubt it’s come out huge! Now of course with a new season comes new scandal–it’s time for a shiny new lockout, potentially impacting your on the field NFL experience. But it’s not the players and the owners fighting this time; no, this time it’s the men in striped shirts who have reached an impasse with the NFL.

Most of the fans around the country are enraged at the replacement that the NFL owners have hired to officiate the games while the real refs are locked out. Fans everywhere, from watercooler talk to internet chat sites, are complaining they’re not doing their job well and they want the original referees back on the field. For example, Green Bay fans and even some teams of the NFL were shocked to know that the last play in the Packers vs. Seahawks game, the referees called a touchdown, when clearly it wasn’t! That’s just one of the reasons fans want those referees out. Now we’re just going to have to wait and see what happens and hope that the lockout will be over soon.

On a lighter note, since the season started, we’ve seen new quarterbacks for different teams–which is a good thing, because the NFL needed a little change in the game. Take the Denver Broncos: now that Tim Tebow is gone, it’s Peyton Manning time. After a while of not playing football due to injuries, Manning is back on the field and he’s here to stay. As for the Bronco’s last quarterback, Tebow was traded to the  Jets to join Mark Sanchez in New York. Experts say this will be an excellent team now that Tebow has joined them.

Last year The New England Patriots made it to the Super Bowl, losing to the New York Giants. If they’re trying to make it back to the big game, they might have to go without Aaron Hernandez. The Patriots suffered a huge blow during their upset loss to Arizona on Sunday, September 16th, when Hernandez had to be helped in the locker room. While he was being taken down on a tackle, Hernandez’s right ankle rolled awkwardly, and he was on crutches before the game ended. Let’s hope that he gets better in a few weeks for the Patriots.

In the Raiders vs. Steelers game, Darrius Heyward-Bey took a big hit on Sunday September 23rd. As he was about to catch the ball for a touchdown, Ryan Mundy tackled him and Heyward was unconscious as he was falling down. He was sent to the hospital and spent the night there for observation. Heyward-Bey was released from the hospital on Monday. He suffered a concussion and a strained neck on the scary hit that stopped the game on Sunday for more than 10 minutes as Heyward-Bey had to regain consciousness before being carted off the field and taken to the hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.

As for the defending Super Bowl champs, the New York Giants, they have actually surprised most fans and critics since they have started their season 2-1. But hey, it’s only the third week. Don’t miss this week’s Sunday football because it will bring you huge games like New England at Buffalo, Oakland at Denver, San Francisco at NY Jets, NY Giants at Philadelphia and plenty more! Don’t miss out.
