Bloomington, CA—An ordinary Tuesday night turned into a night to remember for four Yellowjackets.
On Jan. 27, Colton Joint Unified School District held its 38th annual District Science Fair at Bloomington High School. Colton High had 14 Yellowjackets nominated for awards, more than Bloomington and Grand Terrace combined.
Of the 14 Yellowjackets, four were awarded gold medals.
The Science Fair is broken into divisions based on educational level: elementary, middle school, and high school. For each division, the project which received the most points from the panel of judges won the Sweepstakes prize.
For the Senior Division, Colton High School’s “Passive Tremor Stabilization Prototype” by Addy Lemos and Lexxie Ayala, was this year’s Sweepstakes recipient.
Addy Lemos expressed gratitude and hope for their achievements. “It feels like my whole life I’ve never gotten first place. I was just the side character over here.”
“So finally, being in the spotlight, recognized first place was a big deal to me.”
Later that evening, Colton High School was called for one more award.
Gold medalists Cosmo Mosher-Dominguez, Diana Pham, Addy Lemos, and Lexxie Ayala were awarded the School Site Trophy, which recognizes the school with the best overall performance for their division.
With these victories, Colton’s gold medalists will move on to the San Bernardino County Science Fair on Feb. 26, where they will compete against participants from schools across the county for a chance to compete at the State level.
Lemos is excited about their team’s future prospects. “Moving forward. I’m excited. I think I have a chance at winning even the county science fair.”
