Colton, CA—On Jan.15, Colton High hosted the Student Forum, a monthly event where students share their opinions and pose questions about various aspects of school.
This month students expressed their thoughts and questions regarding their educational experience at CHS.
The event focused on engaging students. Students proposed questions and considerations about various incentives and activities designed to prepare students for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), which were central to the discussions. This interactive format encouraged everyone to share their ideas and thoughts, creating a collaborative atmosphere. The event enriched the conversations by emphasizing student input and making their perspectives a key part of the activities.
Suggestions mainly focused on the (CAASPP), and the cafeteria. Several questions aimed to assess the effectiveness of (CAASPP) and evaluate whether the current incentives can have a more significant impact in the long term. Many students expressed concerns about the limited food options, asking why the same meals were served frequently. Staff addressed these concerns and provided clarification.
During the event, many students voiced their concerns and inquiries, and several shared their perspectives, fostering an atmosphere focused on the exhibitors and the students.
“Well, I think it was very useful and at the same time it was important to do that event because then the students could express themselves and at the same time feel listened to, in addition to the fact that it would help the school/district to obtain information about what the students want or need to perform their best academically,” said Kehony Ocampo.
Now that CHS staff has considered the students’ opinions, they can begin to identify areas for improvement and potential changes. While immediate action may not be feasible, the positive aspect of this process is the school’s gradual understanding of student perspectives.
