Colton, CA—Everyone loves pie, especially Colton High.
Yesterday, Jan. 23, was National Pie Day, and CHS celebrated by having a pie-eating contest and giving free pies to students at lunch. ASB gifted more than 150 pies in flavors such as apple, cherry, chocolate pudding, and more.
During 4th period, ASB students distributed Pies to teachers and staff with a flyer thanking them “for everything you do, we hope you have a wonderful day!”
The pie-eating contest happened at lunch. Ten contestants competed in a speed eating contest for a $10 Starbucks gift card. Students had to eat with their hands behind their backs and stand up when they finished. This year’s winner was freshman Christan Soto.
“I wanted to feel what it was like to win a pie-eating contest,” Soto said. “It felt great! It always felt great to win.” He intends to use his card to get himself a tall coffee, black.
In addition to the pie-eating event, ASB also held a poll for “Best pie.” Students were invited to vote when picking up their pie. They received stickers to place on the pie type they believed to be best. Apple was declared the winner.
National Pie Day is a novelty holiday sponsored since 1986 by the American Pie Council as a tribute to shortening producer Crisco’s 75th anniversary. The Pie Council hosts pie championships each year in Orlando, FL as part of the annual Great American Pie Festival.
