Colton, CA—Loud shrieks and screams echoed from the inside of the Whitmer Auditorium as students waited in line for a turn.
On Thursday October 31, Colton High’s Drama Club gave scared CHS students at their annual Haunted Maze event. This is the third year Drama Club has hosted a maze for Halloween, with this year being the most eerie yet.
This year the Whitmer was darkened with sheets and props placed everywhere as Drama Club members lurked in the shadows, primed to bestow terror upon their fellow classmates and staff.
“There were some huge changes with just being super organized, with the structure being prepared, with props and the themes and utilizing the materials that we already had from previous plays and kind of recycling and reusing things,” said Drama Club advisor Sarah Hantuli about the event’s success.
Drama Club President Ja’len Terry was stoked by the effort his club put into the event. “We put in a lot, a lot of time, a lot of effort, and a lot of dedication,” he said. “I’m so proud of my actors. Shout out to Raj, who actually built the maze. He deserves his flowers 100% because without him, we wouldn’t even have the maze. And if we did make the maze, it wouldn’t have looked as good if he didn’t do it.”
While the event was a success, it wasn’t without incident. When asked about his experience, Terry shared, “It was interesting because, you know, this was my first maze, but also it was kind of chaotic because a lot of the actors got hit, so I got punched like seven times from scaring people. So yeah, it was rough, but we ended up having fun. It was a good day overall.”
The Haunted Maze was not the only Halloween-themed event for the day. At lunch time ASB organized a snack and drink sale with most items sold at $1 each. And the Junior Class continued hosting their week-long “Slime-A-Junior” fundraiser, giving people an opportunity to dump green goo on selected juniors for $5 a bucket.
Looking forward, Drama Club is now in pre-production on their first play of the year. Dates for cast auditions will be annouced soon.
