Colton, CA—On Friday, August 26, the Colton High HEAL Pathway took part in a field trip to the California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM).

Students toured the facilities at CUSM, which included college rooms, lounge areas, a gym, and clinical skills rooms.

“This was a kick off event for the Health Care Collaborative program,” said HEAL adviser Kristin Griffith. “It goes on all year and is run by the med school.”

During the trip, students discovered what it feels like to be on a college campus, and learn about the demands of a medical program.

A highlight of the trip was the medical station which featured a lifelike mannequin that blinked, breathed, cried, and even spoke. This tool is used to support simulation of interactions between nurses and patients. The mannequin was even used to practice IV insertion through catheter holes in the arms.

Other stations included brain stimulators, blood pressure machines, and information centers.

HEAL Pathway is Colton High’s medical career program. Students learn about the medical profession, take classes geared towards preparing them for the career, and work towards earning certifications that will kickstart their careers after graduation.

CUSM opened its doors in summer of 2018 after six years of preparation and curriculum development by administration and faculty. From the start, they were aligned with CJUSD and the medical pathway programs at each high school. The school holds spots for a number of graduating seniors from each high school as part of a deal with the district.

Griffith shared what makes this program worthwhile for Colton’s pathway students: “The main takeaway for our students is that they get to network with the medical students once a month, and build relationships with these people who are in a place where they want to be.”
