Colton, CA—Last night, Colton High hosted its annual Back-to-School Night. Families got to meet their students’ teachers, tour the campus, and learn more about the culture of Colton High.

Families were welcomed by principal John Abbott who explained all the expectations, hopes, and aspirations for the 2022-2023 school year.

Principal Abbott also shared his concerns about the failing rate of African-American and Latino male students. He spoke out on many ways to help students improve and ways to get parents more involved with their children.

After Abbott’s presentation, students and parents roamed the school, going from class to class to meet the CHS staff. Families were given 10 minutes per class period to talk to teachers, listen to presentations, and ask questions. Each teacher spoke passionately about their classroom expectations and how they run their classes. Time was of the essence considering there was only 10 minutes available before the next group arrived.

During second period, teachers presented an informational slideshow about MAPS test scores and what each student needs to focus on for improvement. This connected back to the second period advisory lesson students had during the school day in which they received the results from last week’s MAPS testing in order to reflect and set academic goals for themselves this school year.

Back-to-School Night was successful and provided an opportunity for families to be more involved with their students’ academic growth.
