CROSS Club and ASB join forces for the 2021 CHS Canned Food Drive

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, Colton High’s community service club brings back a Thanksgiving tradition

CROSS Club President Anthony Gomez gives the thumbs up for this year’s collection of canned goods. CROSS Club led the charge to resume the annual Canned Food Drive this year.

Colton, CA—As Thanksgiving season approaches, Colton High School’s CROSS Club and ASB are doing their part to give back to the community, by collecting donations in the annual CHS Canned Food Drive.

Donations for the Canned Food Drive were collected during fourth period on November 17. The fourth period class with the highest total will be awarded a pizza party by ASB on November 19. Community members were also invited to donate.

All collected food items are taken to the Gonzales Center in Colton for distribution to the community.

“The last time we did this was two years ago,” Alexandra Buskirk, ASB Director said. “The kids were excited about making sure everything goes back to our friends and families.”

The idea to run the schoolwide collection this year started with the CROSS Club, a religious club on campus devoted to community service. “It’s a great idea to help out those in need,” said Anthony Gomez, CROSS Club President. “In CROSS Club, that’s what we’re about.”

Usually, ASB handles the full responsibility of running the Canned Food Drive, but this year, Gomez and his club members approached the student body organization about the possibility of joining forces.

“They came up with an awesome idea,” Buskirk said. “We can do this because we already have the structure for doing it.”

Now that the Canned Food Drive is completed for the Thanksgiving push, the CROSS Club is already looking towards the future. According to Gomez, they are looking at doing a Cereal Drive sometime this winter.
