New Colton skateboard park finally on the drawing board

It seems that there is finally hope again for a new skate park for the skateboarders of Colton. After numerous meetings held in the past three years, the Colton Gonzalez Community Center finally held another meeting concerning the building of the new skate park. The only difference about this meeting was they had great news for the skateboarders looking forward to their long awaited park. This meeting was held on the 28th of March, and skateboarder from all parts of Colton showed up to hear the news they have been waiting for since the last meeting in January of 2012.

The meeting was held in the Gonzalez Teen Center right behind the community center. They finally announced that the city has the money to build the new skate park. It has been a long 3 years since the first meetings back in 2010 when the skateboarders of Colton got great news that their old boring skate park would be rebuilt. Unfortunately this would never happen due to the city of Colton not having the funds to build the park. Now that the city has the money, the park can be built.

A layout was created to show the skateboarders how it will look when it’s done and to give the skateboarders an opportunity to make their own changes to the park. Even though they had a few concerns with how the park will be built, they were pleased to hear that the construction of the park will be done in about 3 months. Ramon Cortez, a Colton High student and skateboarder, comments, “ I’m really happy that we are finally getting a new skate park after waiting for so long. I think city’s effort in making this park happen was a little poor, but at least we’re finally going to have something good to skate instead of going to boring skate spots.”

It will take two weeks for the city to approve the changes of the layout the skateboarders made, but for the most, the project is a go. After this has been approved there will be another meeting to announce the date the construction will begin.

A skate park is very important to a community. If there is nothing for the skateboarder to skate, they will resort to going out in the city where they will always be harassed by law enforcement. This skate park will definitely make an improvement to the city by finally offering the skateboarder a place to skate without causing trouble. After years of meeting and discussions the building of the new Cesar Chavez skate park it is finally going to happen. The skateboarders of Colton have hope again for their new skate park.
