Mock Trial moving from club to classroom

Mock trial has been  practicing after school every Thursday and has had a few encounters with actual courts , yet some of the students who were part of this program felt slightly intimidated since, at Colton High School, mock trial was only an after school program , while at most other schools it was a class. Yet Colton’s mock trial team has been amazing, and they now wish to have a class next year to see how much better they could do.

English teacher Lucy Leyva is the teacher-coach of the mock trial team at Colton. Two other attorney-coaches help out: one was a past graduate of Colton High, and she says she has been excited to be back at her graduating high school.  She served as the coach of the team since she is now an attorney and not only did she help students out but she motivated them  because she graduated from Colton. The team proved to be dedicated and motivated since it took after school dedication to get as far as the Colton Mock trial team got.

The plan for next year is different:  with a Mock Trial class in place, Colton students can be more prepared and have every day to practice and learn about how to practice a trial. This will help students prepare for college and future careers since it includes attorney roles, acting, and a bailiff. The work that mock trial takes is not only hard but dedicated work since they must go in front a real judge and be judged by real attorneys. The preparation that it takes is intense and no joke; yeah, it’s a fun thing to try, since you get a taste of what real attorneys and judges have to go through every day. Mock trial is not only hard work, it’s fun and you get to see different sides of students since it takes serious to the next level. Next year you should definitely consider joining Mock trial.

Our Goal

Recently, the CHS Publications Department experienced a major theft as over $20,000 in photography equipment was stolen from our studio over Spring Break. This included all cameras. Any amount you donate will help rebuild our program. Thank you!
