We all watched the highly anticipated Super Bowl game between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers, but how many of you knew that one of the players on the Ravens was a former Yellowjacket? That’s right, a current super bowl ring winner, Jimmy Smith, walked the same halls as the current students at Colton High.
Smith, who graduated in 2005, took part in one controversial call when he may (or may not) have held Michael Crabtree, a wide receiver for the 49ers, during the last offensive drive in the game, which ultimately prevented the 49ers from scoring a 4th touchdown in the last few minutes of the game. The refs didn’t call a foul, and the Ravens won the game.
Senior Paula Smith, Jimmy Smith’s little sister, and her family attended Super Bowl XVLII in New Orleans to support the Raven player. “The whole trip was a really exciting experience,” said Paula. “The stadium was awesome and huge! We had second row seats which were right behind the 49er endzone. My family is very excited and proud of Jimmy. Also, New Orleans’ food was amazing! We had alligator meat and beignets, a French dessert. They were bomb! The only thing I didn’t like too much was the traffic. But besides that, I had a great time!”
Congratulations to Jimmy Smith, his family, and the entire Ravens’ team on their big win! This just goes to show you that through hard work and dedication, you can become anything and go anywhere, even a professional football player in the Super Bowl.
Keep your goals high and stay focused because your dreams CAN come true, Yellowjackets!
