“Where’s Waldo?”
That was Oswaldo Valle’s campaign theme. Take a photo of him and post it on social media, and you could win a prize.
It’s clever for a lot of reasons, but mostly because Oswaldo Valle is sort of . . . everywhere.
If you’re a freshman, you see him during PE on Wednesdays as part of Freshman Follow-Up where he passes down tips on how to be successful in high school.
If you’re a teammate, you can find him playing soccer out on the Memorial Stadium field. He’s played varsity soccer all four years of high school, and has been playing pretty much since he was in diapers and could kick a ball. In his sophomore year, his team won league and made it to CIF.
If you are a criminal, one day you’ll find him on the right side of the law. Valle has wanted to be in law enforcement since he was a child. “When I was a kid, I held onto this police officer doll I had,” he said. Now, he is a member of the Police Explorers through the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department, where he is learning the basics of police work.
And if you are a Colton High junior or senior, you’ll find Valle at prom on Saturday night, hoping to come home with the prom king crown.
His family and friends have been supportive and encouraging during his campaign. “My mom pushed me… she had a lot of faith in me.” Valle’s mom has supported him by posting about his campaign. “I did have some help, my two friends that helped me out, they helped me cut out the cutout board, helped me come up with ideas for the gift to hand out.”
Running for prom king hasn’t come without its doubts. Valle had second thoughts about running when he was nominated, but he is running because his mom didn’t have the chance to run for prom court when she was in high school, and she encouraged him to embrace the opportunity.
So on Saturday night, everyone will know where Waldo will be.
