Baseball, football, and now Prom court—Kyle Mejia basically radiates confidence standing front and center, but he’s just as nervous as the rest of us.
“It just feels exciting and very nerve racking at the same time,” Mejia said about running for prom king. “Because there’s only one winner overall.”
Kyle is one of CHS’s multi-sport varsity athletes as part of both our baseball and football teams. With his teams, he’s made it to the playoffs and won a league title. He’s also a member of ASB. He even ran for homecoming prince before, but never really promoted himself.
Now he’s ready to do that. While putting himself out there comes with a lot of anxiety, one thing is for certain: Kyle is not alone.

One of the best parts of playing sports is having a team, and just like with baseball and football, Kyle has a teammate beside him as he runs for prom king, too. He’s running alongside prom queen nominee Dexia Casillas.
“It feels better having someone to run with,” he said. “It’s similar to having a team. It feels like you have a better chance.”
Kyle’s interest in being part of prom court shows how he is connected to both sides of his family. Sports are a way that he stays connected to his dad and brother who “weren’t really big on prom and running for king.” Meanwhile, his mom and sister are the prom people. They were both previous nominees, and have been giving Kyle tons of tips.
This contrast is what keeps him well-rounded. Kyle likes exploring opportunities no matter how nervous he may be. Win or lose, he’s happy he got the experience. He believes it will help him with college and future jobs.
That’s what confidence does for you. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the batter’s box, on the line of scrimmage, or campaigning for prom king. As always, confidence is king.
