AVID Club provides opportunities for students with difficult schedules

The introduction of the AVID Club this year makes it even easier for students to learn about college readiness and educational opportunities

AVID at Colton High School is an on-campus program and class that helps our students study towards becoming college-ready.

Most students who take this class have had it for a couple of years at least, and have always been willing to give up that one elective slot to the class. But for those who aren’t able to work that out, the AVID Club provides a great opportunity to provide the same benefits.

“This would be my 6th year in AVID,  and I never really knew that AVID had a club [prior to joining], But I think this club can bring many opportunities for students who didn’t join the class earlier or didn’t have room for it in their schedules to be a part,” Avid Club Treasurer Xavier Rocha shares.

This year, the AVID club this year is being run by the new AVID coordinator, Ms.Montiel, who is also the new AVID Senior teacher.

A guest speaker from UC San Diego gives a presentation about their campus to AVID/AVID Club students.

To join this club, visit her in Room 466 while she’s there during the day to get informed on the date of the next meeting. The AVID Club usually meets Friday after school, but most meetings are tentatively scheduled.

When students attend those meetings, the club is a great way to get even more students involved than ever. “I hope to reach as many students as possible and build a strong AVID culture and community,” says Ms. Montiel.

Montiel emphasizes that inclusivity by letting it be known that there are no requirements to join the Club. Anyone that wants to join, can. They hope to reach many students at CHS this way and help them prepare for a higher education after graduating .

A way the AVID club does that is by having guest speakers from nearby colleges and universities come and give presentations about their school, helping students learn about their options. The Club this year has welcomed speakers from the University of Redlands, UCR, UCSD, and CBU.

“Being a part of the AVID club has given me explanations on college and opportunities that I wouldn’t have known prior to these presentations,” said AVID Club Member Adrian Colonga.

At their usual meetings, the club makes plans on how to advocate for, promote, and organize events to share out about college readiness with CHS and the Colton community.

The AVID Club welcomes a representative from CBU in class to learn about the campus and academics.

Even though it sounds all serious and studious, they also plan fun events for students to engage with. They put on an annual college fair run by students, tailgates at football games, and this October they’re planning some Halloween themed lunchtime activities.

Many AVID promoted events have already happened on campus so far too. Events like the College and Career weeks, College wednesdays, and Dress for Success Day at the beginning of each month.

Little events like these help to encourage students to pursue the career of their choice. AVID can help them achieve that.

Ms. Montiel declares that,“What’s good for AVID students, is good for all students.”

Recently, the CHS Publications Department experienced a major theft as over $20,000 in photography equipment was stolen from our studio over Spring Break. This included all cameras. Any amount you donate will help rebuild our program. Thank you!
