The truth is I’ve heard about Ms. Hughes since I was in the fifth grade. She was my older sister Velia’s teacher from tenth through twelfth grade.

Velia always wanted to be a doctor. When we would come back from school, I would watch her do her homework and ask her all about that “doctor” class she had. I thought it was cool and I always wanted to have that same class.

Now, I do. Ms. Hughes is not only a good teacher but a trustworthy adult, a friend, and a kind soul.

Her class is definitely one of my favorites. When I walk into her room I feel as if I always learn something new that will help me later in life. Her projects are fun and entertaining to do, and they make me want to try my best.

I’ve only known Ms. Hughes for a short while, but she has been wonderful and understanding in every interaction I’ve had with her.

She explains everything so clearly and makes sure to answer all my questions.

In the time of need when I was confused on which classes to take for senior year, she was there to help me out more than any of my counselors. She walked me through the whole procedure, making me feel okay about being confused and not knowing what to do.

Now that I’ve met Mrs. Hughes myself, I know I can trust her and learn a lot from her.

Now Velia is about to graduate from college and continue working toward her goal. As I talk to her about her life, I realize that what I’m learning in Mrs. Hughes class will adequately prepare me for college, too.

I’m not as smart as my sister, but I know Mrs. Hughes was a big help for Velia while she was in high school. I know I have a lot to learn from Mrs. Hughes, too.
