When choosing a career, it’s all up to you

Have you decided what you want to do after high school? Don’t be alarmed if you have not decided and you’re almost at the end of your high school years. Many students are at the same place you are; just because you hear what other classmates want to do that does not mean they are going to actually study that.  You can be sure of what you want now, but once you begin college, your views can change and you might take your study towards a different direction.

The worst thing you can do is force yourself to make a decision and stick to it even if you’re not sure about it. This career that you choose will be where you will spend more than half of your life. You want to make sure you are comfortable with what the job is and that you enjoy it. I know I much rather enjoy making money than hate getting up every day for work. The bottom line is you know yourself better than anyone knows you. Don’t let someone decide your future and don’t let a test decide what careers are fit for your personality. Anyone can do whatever they want and that is what is so amazing about deciding your future. You have the opportunity to make it the way you want it to be. Don’t choose a career because they make a lot of money– wouldn’t you rather be happy making good money and being happy all at the same time?

Your future should consist of all the things you love and enjoy; nobody but you decides for you. You might hear your friends saying that they are going to be attornys, doctors, or accountants, but just because they know what they want that doesn’t mean you should feel pressured to know. Something you can do to help yourself decide is try to think of careers you think you might enjoy and then talking to people who acquire those jobs. You can ask them any questions you have, and if you get answers you don’t like, then cross that job off of your list. No job will be perfect, but you should decide what you can be okay with and what you can’t tolerate.

Don’t worry if you haven’t decided yet, you’re not alone; don’t make a decision you will regret later. Take your time and decide what you want at your own pace. Take charge of your future.

Recently, the CHS Publications Department experienced a major theft as over $20,000 in photography equipment was stolen from our studio over Spring Break. This included all cameras. Any amount you donate will help rebuild our program. Thank you!
