Tattoos: more than simple fashion statements

Have you thought about getting a tattoo? Or maybe why anyone would get a tattoo?

Most teenagers have thought about this, and most people first get inked at a young age. When you look around Colton High, you can see that not only do some of your fellow students have tattoos, but also some staff.

It’s been a trend since before we can remember. This is not a fashion statement, but a way to express who you are. Tattoos have many uses to them; some get tattoos to remember something or someone and others just get them because they have wanted them for a while.

Tattoos can work for just about anyone. They are suitable for not only teenagers, but anyone who is able to take the pain. Yeah, we have all heard many sides to it: tattoos hurt; or no, they don’t hurt. But the truth is you don’t know what it’s like until you actually get one yourself. You can’t rely on someone’s opinion because every person is different. In reality, it’s either you want one or you don’t, and getting a tattoo doesn’t make you any better but maybe it helps you complete yourself. It all depends on how you are.

Speaking of tattoos, there are plenty of tats around us. Why not hear from some of our fellow friends? Let’s go ahead and take a look at what security guards, Art Martinez and Shawn Campa, and an anonymous student, here at Colton High, have to say about their own tattoos:

How many tattoos do you have?

Art: Nine tattoos.

Shawn: Seven tattoos.

Student: Just one.

Which is your Favorite?

Art: My wife’s name, we have been married for 30 years.

Shawn: Don’t have one.

Do you plan on getting anymore?

Art: Yes, once you get one you want more.

Shawn: No, just want to cover some up.

Student: Yes, they are like chocolate. When you have one, you want more.

How old were you when you got your fist tattoo?

Art: I was 14.

Shawn: I was 15.

Student: I was 15

Do you regret any tattoo?

Art: No.

Shawn: All of them.

What is the meaning behind your only tattoo?

Student: It reminds me that love overcomes cruelty.

Our Goal

Recently, the CHS Publications Department experienced a major theft as over $20,000 in photography equipment was stolen from our studio over Spring Break. This included all cameras. Any amount you donate will help rebuild our program. Thank you!
