Creative Writing Is Back!

Colton High has a new elective for all the poets and storytellers out there; creative writing! The course is instructed by English Teacher David Rainey as a semester long class.

Senior Jordyn Whaylen loves the class. “I think it’s really fun and entertaining,” she said. To “Why did you take this class?” senior Mynor Pablo said, “I didn’t, this class took me.”

Senior Jenyfer Duenas likes many things of the class but most importantly likes the fact that “You are free to express yourself, not repress yourself.” Junior Christine Trevino said she would sum up the class as “Chill.” The four students said they would all recommend the class, especially to those who are serious about writing.

Creative writing was actually an elective back in 1997 but due to it not meeting U.C. requirements it only lasted a quarter. After 15 years, Principal Amanda Corridan came to Rainey for any suggestions with electives and he proposed creative writing. English Department Chair Lucy Leyva aided in the reviving of this class by getting it approved.

According to Rainey, starting a creative writing class has always been a dream of his. His favorite type of creative writing is poetry and his favorite poet is Robert Frost. Rainey said that his class was “coming along great.” He hopes people have interest in taking the class, as so do many of the students in creative writing.

Recently, the CHS Publications Department experienced a major theft as over $20,000 in photography equipment was stolen from our studio over Spring Break. This included all cameras. Any amount you donate will help rebuild our program. Thank you!
