“Sinners” is a film that feels like it shouldn’t work but absolutely does and exceeds expectations at that.
The film is a vampire flick set in the Jim Crow era. It takes place in Mississippi Delta in 1932 and the story flows through Sammie, “Preacher Boy” Moor, son of the town’s preacher and his twin cousins Stack and Smoke Moore.
“Sinners” is considered a horror movie, but the horror elements don’t stand out as much as you would expect, especially upon watching the trailer. The movie holds back on the vampire’s visual aspects, allowing the dialogue to tell you that they are vampires and how they are killed. This makes the film a lot more ominous and thrilling.
Throughout the movie it’s hard to consider one of the characters to be the protagonist as it feels more like the city is the protagonist and we’re just living in it. Performance wise, the cast is incredible. Including stars such as Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, this cast allowed for each character to feel genuine and real. A surprising stand out that was hidden in the trailers was Miles Caton, who experienced his first acting role in making this film
Miles Caton had his big break playing the role of Sammie Moor, who is the son of the town’s preacher. His chemistry with Michael B Jordan, who plays the role of twins in the movie, was incredible.
Nothing comes without its flaws, however, even though there’s close to none. My one critique was that the death of certain characters felt a bit random and uncalled for; almost as if they had to be killed off because the writers were not sure what to do with them. While yes, it’s very realistic that people are going to die when battling a horde of vampires, it can leave you feeling slightly underwhelmed.
Overall, I believe the film accomplishes exactly what it was meant to while also experimenting genres. You may find that the message is difficult to follow; however, its one of deep meaning.
Whether you’re looking for a movie that’s experimental or you just want to see Michael B. Jordan murder vampires and hold big guns, Sinners is worth a watch.
