2025 has seen the release of several new songs across various genres. While there is something for everyone, I find myself particularly drawn to indie tracks and music with a more melancholic tone.
Here are a few songs that have been recently released.
“i cant tell (love my money)” – Montell Fish
Even though this song was released in the later half of 2024, “i cant tell” is a song that simply feels like 2025 . Montell expresses his struggle with identity and purpose in the face of his reliance on God’s guidance. He explores the themes of sacrificing parts of oneself when choosing a life with God, and the struggle of temptations of fame. My connection with this track stems from the fact that I know how it feels to struggle and what its like sacrificing certain things to live a better life alongside God, allowing the lyrics to feel like they’re speaking directly to me.
Yesterday’s World – TV Girl, George Clanton
“Yesterday’s World” was released April 4, 2025. This is track 7 from TV Girl and George Clantons collaboration album “Fauxllennium” and is a song that focuses mainly on the feeling of nostalgia. “Can we go back in time?” the chorus repeats. They reflect on the past and the desire to revisit cherished memories. This song touches my soul in a way that brings me back to my own memories. “Time is moving at an accelerated rate” they sing which allows their listeners to enjoy the future and live through the moment because time goes by fast.
Phases – Cuco
“Phases” was also released on April 4, 2025. Cuco released this as a single from his album “ Ridin’ ” which is scheduled to be released May 9. The lyrics in this song talk about the ending of a romantic relationship. “Tenant in my heart” confronts a love that has turned sour. Cuco explains that there was no direct inspiration for “Phases” but it was more of capturing an energy shift, and Cuco and his team only wanted to pick up the pace and create a more danceable song. I feel this song so deeply because of how he explains a relationship shifting. This song would be more directed to people who have experienced it and could relate to it the most.
xonfession – girl in red
“Confession” was more of a surprise release on February 28, it is also her first new song after her 2024 sophomore album “ I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY” and she returns to her lo-fi roots. This track is described as stripped-back, intimate, and vulnerable, and it gets into the feelings of nostalgia and regret, she invites listeners to take a moment for self-reflection and also allows them to feel a glimpse of the artist’s mindset. As I listened to this song I started dwelling on my past and thinking about my past decisions,”there’s a part of me that knows I wouldn’t do it again.” Girl in Red takes her listeners to their past and relive those moments of regret in their minds.
There’s a Field (That’s Only Yours) – Daniel Caesar, Rex Orange County
“There’s a Field” was released on February 14, 2025, it brings a soft acoustic paired with a bittersweet undertone. Mustufa also offers both his writing and production. The meaning behind the lyrics talks about struggles of relationship, like communication issues and emotional distance, but still holds onto memories of better times and love. “I can’t fall with you, but I’ll fall with you” is used as a way to explain that he does not necessarily need to engage in his partner’s struggles but he’s willing to be in his partner’s experiences, I can truly relate to this song because I feel the need to be someone’s support, and if anyone can feel this song deeply, its people who feel the need to always be there for people.
Rearrange My World – Daniel Caesar, Rex Orange County
“Rearrange My World” was released February 14, 2025 which was a collaboration between Daniel Caesar and Rex Orange County, the lyrics express a way to explore the transformation power of love and the vulnerability of allowing someone into your life, and expressing a deep admiration for a person and acknowledge their presence that has changed their whole world. Although I listen to it repeatedly, it never fails to make me emotional. Daniel’s voice gives me chills because of how smooth and soft his voice is.
