Since its release last December, fans worldwide have eagerly awaited Squid Game Season 2. This new season features a cast that includes Lee Jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Joon, and Im Si-wan.
The real question is, was it really what we needed? Its a question I’ve pondered since it’s release.
One of the most surprising aspects of the season is the compelling character development that unfolds. For instance, Gi-Hun, who previously struggled to see the light in the game, demonstrates significant growth.
So far in the story, Gi-Hun is traumatized by the games and has one objective: to finish them.
He transforms from a charismatic, humorous, and optimistic individual in the prior season to someone who appears serious and reserved. This remarkable evolution of our protagonist is truly captivating, ultimately resulting in a character that is both memorable and impactful.
We meet two characters who help Gi-Hun find the island. We meet the man who gave Gi-Hun the card to enter the game and the police officer from the previous season looking for his brother.
Critics have given the new season an impressive 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This remarkable score reflects a strong consensus amongst reviewers, indicating that the season resonates well with both critics and fans alike.
Something I could say about this season is that it moves away a little from the main plot of Gi-Hun trying to complete the games for money to one where our protagonist has to end the games; which I feel steers away from the original story too much. I personally don’t think its bad, but I see it as a bit unnecessary since it could have ended in season 1.
A few characters could have benefited from more nuanced development to resonate more profoundly with the audience.
Player 388 showed us a lot of potential, but he was just someone who didn’t give much and became unmemorable.I had high expectations for his character but was ultimately disappointed.
Those hoping for a definitive conclusion to the series, however, will need to exercise some patience, as the next season is scheduled to be released on June 27, 2025.
