Oasis, formed in 1991 and split up in 2009, is now planning to play shows this upcoming year after 15 years. Upon Oasis announcing their return and putting up tickets for sale for shows across the United Kingdom, they instantly sold out.
Now they are returning to America, with tickets going on sale today for shows in Chicago, New Jersey and Los Angeles. They will be playing the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sep. 6 and 7 next year.
Oasis’s album “Dig Out Your Soul,” released in 2008, was their last album before splitting up. Their best album, however, is widely considered to be 1995’s “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” which features their #1 hit, “Wonderwall.” Other hits include “Live Forever,” “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” and “Champagne Supernova.”
Let’s take a listen to the group’s six best songs. And if you haven’t heard at least one of them, you must live under a rock.
6. Rock ‘n’ Roll Star
The first song, ranked at #6, is “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star.” This song is the opening track on their debut album, “Definitely Maybe.” “Definitely Maybe” became one of the fastest selling debut albums in British history, selling over 86,000 copies in its first week; which in my opinion, is undoubtedly a great achievement for any musician or band. Upon the release of this song and album, Oasis pretty much immediately became the country’s most important band of the decade. Turns out the song title was a prophecy.
5. Acquiesce
In this song, the Gallagher brothers, Noel and Liam, switch off vocals. Many people have concluded that the track’s lyrics are meant to acknowledge the brothers’ bond, to which Noel has responded to in interviews by saying that the theory is “crap” (crap being the PG version of what he actually said). This song is also a B-side record. A B-side song is a song that exclusively shows up as a bonus song on a CD or vinyl record but does not appear on the tracklist of an album or EP. However, B-sides sadly hardly exist anymore, as most music is now digital, which is just another factor making this song so special.
4. Supersonic
“Supersonic” has a very cool, spacy kind of name which is one of the reasons it’s one of my favorites. This song combines pop and rock and is also incredibly easy to learn on guitar (for those who play the guitar.) Written by Noel Gallagher, it was Oasis’s first number 31 hit in the UK. Supersonic is also their debut single. This song is on the group’s album “Definitely Maybe”, which is where they started to become famous and gain more attention. The music video for the song was also filmed on a roof of a warehouse in London, which was also one of the aspects that I enjoy about it.
3. Champagne Supernova
“Champagne Supernova” is another recognizable song from Oasis’s album “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”. This is one of my favorites from this album along with two others on this list. Also isn’t Champagne Supernova such a cool name for a song just the word supernova by itself is cool word. This song is such a good song to listen to if you just want to chill out and fall asleep listening to it. This song was also created by the lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. This song also has a guest guitarist, Paul Weller and he also does backup vocals on the song.
2. Don’t Look Back in Anger
“Dont Look Back in Anger” is their second most famous song; however, there’s a lot of debate around this song. The argument is that “Don’t Look Back in Anger” takes the cake as the best Oasis song over “Wonderwall”, which I’d personally have to agree with. This song being a rock-melody is what makes it altogether more enjoyable.
1. Wonderwall
And lastly, the song ranked number one on this list is the groups most recognizable song from their discography, “Wonderwall”. Not only is this their most well known song made but it is also one of the most well known songs from the mid-90s. People are excited and anticipating their return just because of the simple fact that they’ll be able to witness this song live. This song has had a significant impact on the indie rock world, along with the rest of their discography. Even though I hardly listen to them, “Wonderwall” is undoubtedly an incredibly amazing song.
