The competition gets more fierce as the movies take their knives out to carve a path to victory in the tournament quarterfinals!

Round one is over.

On the left side of the bracket, No. 1 “Get Out” advances easily to face underdog No. 5 “Paranormal Activity.” And both lower seeds No. 6 “Sinister” and No. 7 “Hush” vanquished their more highly favored opponents to square off against each other.

On the right side, No. 1 “Hereditary” crushed No. 8 “Candyman” and will face off against North Korean challenger No. 4 “Train to Busan.” Then, No. 3 “28 Days Later” will take on No. 7 “The Strangers.”

Let the round 2 quarterfinals begin!

No. 1 – Hereditary (2018)

When “Hereditary” was unleashed upon the world in 2018, no one was ready for the potent mix of family drama and extremely weird horror that has come to define the films of Ari Aster. And let’s be honest, is anyone ready yet? “Hereditary” is still a flat-out frightening film about a family coping with an earth shattering amount of grief that may or may not be caused by a cult of Paemon-worshipping naked old people. It has a ton of memorable moments, from perhaps one of the most grisly deaths ever committed to film to one of the most quotable when Toni Collette screams “Wipe that face off your face!”

No. 4 – Train to Busan (2016)

While “28 Days Later” may have popularized the idea of fast movie zombies, “Train to Busan” perfected it. This lighning-paced action-horror classic shocked filmgoers and horror enthusiasts in 2016 when it came over from Korea. It’s a surprisingly sweet story about a single dad trying to protect his daughter on a train from zombies as he tries to get her home safely. There’s a great ensemble of characters, and the zombie violence is . . . chef’s kiss! “Train to Busan” is a rewatchable masterclass of zombie filmmaking. If you don’t vote for it, make sure you take some time this month and watch it.
