In “Prey,” Naru (Amber Midthunder) and her canine companion Sarii (Coco) fight against a Predator to protect their tribe.

Last weekend, the Hulu original movie “Prey” became a sensation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it has become the most watched film in the history of the streaming service.

The film is a prequel/sequel in the “Predator” film series. Unlike most of those films, which are about armed military and mercenaries fighting against a seemingly unkillable alien menace, “Prey” downsized and took its story into the 1700s, in which a Comanche girl finds herself trying to save her tribe from the alien monster.

Amber Midthunder plays Naru, the Comanche girl whose brother, Taabe (Dakota Beavers), has been recently crowned War Chief for their tribe. She wants to prove herself, but runs up against the fears of her mother and the prejudices of her male-dominated tribe.

The movie is a tight, tense horror film that takes full advantage of its setting in the undiscovered forests of 1700s America. But besides Midthunder, who is impressive as the movie’s hero, the other major standout in this movie is Sarii, Naru’s canine companion.

Sarii is played by Coco, a rescue dog the producers found in Fulton County, Georgia, near where the film was shot. Coco had had no previous film training, yet gave a dog performance so fantastic that a lot of fans took to social media to champion not only Coco, but the idea that rescue dogs have considerable value.

In honor of Coco and her Oscar-caliber performance, here are my picks for the top five movie dogs of all-time. I’m sure you’ll completely agree with each pick.

5. Snoopy – “The Peanuts Movie” (2015)

Snoopy is a supporting character in Charles Schultz’s classic children’s series about Charlie Brown and the “Peanuts” gang. He often goes everywhere with Charlie, from school dances and plays, but he is no one’s sidekick. The most memorable moments of the animated movies involve Snoopy doing everything from writing novels to dogfighting in World War I bi-planes against the notorious Red Baron.

4. Sarii – “Prey” (2022)

This is the role rescue dog Coco was born to play. She is the supporter/friend to Naru (Amber Midthunder). As a hunting dog, she is an incredible critical thinker and strategist. It is also clear that she understands what everyone is saying.

3. AXL – “A-X-L” (2018)

A-X-L (which stands for Attack, Exploration, and Logistics) is a new machine in the shape of a dog designed to help and prevent soldiers from dying in war. After an experiment gone wrong, AXL hides in a desert where he is found by Miles Hill (Alex Neustaedter), who has to protect the robot dog from being captured by the corrupt government and military. Miles and AXL go to great lengths to protect each other, proving that the bond between a guy and his pet is about much more than flesh-and-blood.

2. Scooby-Doo – “Scooby-Doo” (2002)

Not much has to be said to make a case for Scooby-Doo. He’s a detective and ghost hunter, which automatically makes him one of the most awesome dogs ever. As a member of Mystery, Inc., he has been the heart of five movies and several TV shows. People cannot get enough of this hungry, goofy dog.

Hercules, a.k.a. The Beast, is our pick for Greatest Movie Dog. This is objective fact. (Courtesy 20th Century Studios)

1. Hercules – “The Sandlot” (1993)

There is no better movie dog. No dog has ever been more important to a story. No dog has ever been cooler than this scary English Mastiff the characters only know as “The Beast,” about whom they build an entire mythology around it’s bloody past of murdering kids. And not only is Hercules amazing, he literally spawned the sequel to “The Sandlot” when it is found out he was protecting its pups, including Goliath, who would be at the center of the new generation of kids’ baseball eating fears in “The Sandlot 2.”
