Insidious 2 Review

Insidious+2+Review

The first Insidious left me in suspense and frightened at the core at just the sound of an eerie man singing “tiptoe through the tulips.” Even after weeks of watching the film, thoughts and images of a demonic red-faced creature still seemed to keep me on edge. I had hoped Insidious: Chapter2 would have the same effect on me, but despite its cold and chilly beginning, the movie becomes quite goofy and lacks its capacity to disturb.

Chapter 2 picks up immediately after the concluding events of Insidious, when Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai (Rose Byrne) Lambert discover the horrible death of their family friend and psychic Elsie (Lin Shaye), after she’s guided Josh in an evil spirit world she refers to as “the Further” to retrieve their son Dalton (Ty Simpkins). While Dalton was able to return to his body, Josh’s was possessed by a bride in black who has haunted him since his childhood. With the help of ghost hunters, the family researches the ghost of the bride in black, travels through the Further and eventually manages to redeem Josh’s spirit after destroying the mother of the ghost that bewitched him. Although the tone of the movie was much cheesier than the first, I still very much enjoyed it. Direct communication with the ghosts helped explain back stories and history of the characters.

Overall, Insidious: Chapter 2 offered a quick ride through a world that was left a mystery at the conclusion of the first movie. As a horror film, it was a bit cheap and blunt, but as a sequel it fulfilled its expectations and gave the viewer a chance to tie up some loose ends.
