Mickey gets the Measles!

Mickey+gets+the+Measles%21

A recent outbreak of the measles has spread across the happiest place on earth, Disneyland California. This outbreak was caused by a sick visitor entering the theme park and is now trying to be controlled. Being a major tourist attraction, thousands of people from the US and outside of the US gather here making this outbreak very serious. This virus can easily spread to other countries making it a global epidemic. There has been no deaths reported from this outbreak but there are more than 30 people who have contracted the virus in four different states. All of these contaminated people can be traced back to patient zero, the sick visitor.

The measles virus lives in the mucus of the nose and throat of the host. The virus causes a sore throat, white spots to form in the mouth/throat, sore eyes, coughing and aches/pains in different parts of the body. This virus is very contagious but is only spread through contact with the mucus of the host. In addition the virus in the mucus can survive up to 2 hours once outside of the host.

It is said that the sick visitor was a child that entered the amusement park around Christmas. Not taking the right sanitary precautions this child or person unknowingly caused this outbreak. Luckily many Americans and visitors outside of the US are taking the proper precautions and getting the vaccine to protect them from this virus. The vaccine is a two part vaccine so you will not be protected if you only have one part of it. Be sure to check with a doctor, clinic, or hospital to ensure your safety. Many should still take caution when going to the amusement park because they can still spread the virus. Following the guidelines for disease control will help end this nightmare. Not only is the vaccine good for your health it could potentially be good for others. If you do visit the amusement park and develop symptoms related to the measles virus see a doctor immediately.

Ethylmercury, a kind of mercury used to be in vaccine, which is eliminated from the body quickly, but it wasn’t the truly dangerous methyl merey. In any case, the vaccine for measles no longer attains it.

Recently, the CHS Publications Department experienced a major theft as over $20,000 in photography equipment was stolen from our studio over Spring Break. This included all cameras. Any amount you donate will help rebuild our program. Thank you!
