Prom Court 2022: Marissa Herrera gets involved and makes lasting memories

Involved in ASB, AVID, HEAL and volleyball, this renaissance woman shares what she's learned these last four years

Marissa Herrera is making her last year of high school memorable and continues to do so by running for prom Queen.

Being involved in ASB, AVID, honors society, and HEAL, it’s only natural for Marissa to be known as a true leader. She dedicates herself to those around her and isn’t afraid to lend a helping hand.

In ASB, Marissa is an Athletics Commissioner. She’s in charge of creating social media posts on the athletics account, reporting scores, going to games, and helping the athletics on campus with any of their necessities.

As if that wasn’t enough work, for her senior year on the volleyball team, Marissa took on the role of Varsity team captain. Her success on the court resulted in being named All-Skyline League. From freshman year to now she has devoted herself to the game and worked her way up. She found herself loving the sport and eventually sought it out as her escape from everything. She has plans to continue playing in the future.

Marissa’s love for things goes beyond just her love for volleyball; she also expresses her love for her car, Petunia. “I didn’t have a name for it yet, but I always thought the name Petunia was so cute and funny,” said Marissa. “I had said it as a joke at first but the name just stuck as I told my family about the name. Now that is its permanent name.”

Petunia plays an important role in Marissa’s life as her way of transportation from school to work, and sometimes practice. Thinking back, Marissa remembers times before she got her car; specifically when her grandma would take her home to eat and get changed, not just for volleyball, but also softball practice. Then she would be there to take Marissa home, as well.

“That to me just meant so much because I knew she wanted to see me happy and doing what I love,” Marisa said.

With graduation coming soon, and the feeling that it all going so quickly, Marissa looks back on her four years at Colton High, and all of her involvement with not just a little nostalgia, but with a message for those following in her footsteps. She hopes to encourage people to make the best out of their time they have left of high school, “I just realize how much time and memories I’ve spent making here at CHS. If there is any advice I can give anyone, it is to be involved and just have fun.”
