Guadalupe Vazquez’s awesome senior year has been capped off by an acceptance to UC Berkeley.

Prom Court 2022: Guadalupe Vazquez’s high school dream comes true

For Guadalupe Vazquez, being nominated for Prom Queen is a validation of all the work she has put in trying to make Colton High School a safer place. Since her freshman year, she has helped start up two strong clubs on campus—Eco-Friendly Friends and Girls Con Ganas—both of which she currently serves through as vice-president.

Lupe explains, “I want an environment that can uplift the personal color here on our campus and create a safe environment to talk about our society’s issues, personal issues, and just anything that can be talked about in a safe environment.”

Both clubs are trying to make change not just to the school, but the community. In the summer of 2019, the “Eco-Friendly Friends Club” did a recycling clothes drive to show there was an alternative to just throwing the clothes away. All the clothes they collected from students, teachers, and staff were donated to different facilities.

Girls Con Ganas is currently working on a project to make feminine hygiene products more accessible at school. They are working with administration on not just improving the availability of products in general, but also the quality of those products provided.

Another project Lupe is passionate about is challenging the school’s dress code in order to reduce its sexist bias, making it more equitable for all students on campus.

Because of her activism, and excellence in the classroom, Lupe has currently been accepted to two prestigious universities: UC Berkeley and UC San Diego.

While both schools are highly regarded, Lupe is leaning towards UC Berkeley. She wants to explore something new since she has been in Colton her entire life.

She is ecstatic about this opportunity. “I think going to UC Berkeley would be really good—to see the city and meet new people!”

Lupe is a determined, hard working person. She maintains a 3.7 or higher GPA and has a lot of A’s on her transcript. Plus, with all her involvement in the school, “getting that scholarship won’t be a challenge.”

Running for prom queen gives her the “shine” that she has needed. “People know of me, but not really about me,” she said.

So, this is her chance to get people to see her real personality and what a great person she really is.

Her campaigning is something she is really proud of because she puts her personality into her posters, which makes her stand out.

Education isn’t the only thing about her; she likes to hang out with friends, take walks with her mom, babysit her niece and nephew, and watch movies and films. From the movies and television shows she loves, she has taken some important lessons. She tries to embody the values of some of the characters she admires, like Sharpay Evans (“Legally Blonde”), Maddy Perez (“Euphoria”), and Alex Russo (“Wizards of Waverly Place”). These characters give her a shining, optimistic personality.

Part of Lupe’s motivation is trying to live that high school dream shared in the movie “High School Musical.”

Lupe is most excited to see herself and everyone all dressed up for prom.

As the big day gets closer, Lupe has some advice for future potential nominees thinking about running: “I think if you wanna run for prom court you totally should because it’s a really fun experience with the right people. Don’t be scared. People are going to say what they are going to say, but you should still be you.“
