Captain of the varsity girls’ soccer team, which she joined her freshman year of high school, Diana loves playing sports. Not only does she play soccer, but she also participated in Track and Field during her freshman and senior years.

To stand out as an individual from her teammates and display elements of her personality, Diana dresses in unique fashion. Her trademark is her bold purple hair.

Contrary to the sports jock trope, Diana enjoys the pop group One Direction, fantasy fiction, and sci-fi—Harry Potter and Marvel superheroes specifically. Her Hogwarts House is Hufflepuff, and the Potterverse character she relates most with is Luna Lovegood.

Marvel has been a big part of Diana’s life. She loves how the unique personalities and powers of each character come together to form a team.

“I have always been a fan of superheroes,” Diana said. “At a young age, I’ve was interested in all the different superheroes and characters. When watching Marvel movies I always know it’s going to be exciting and full of action. I love ‘The Avengers,’ they all have different personalities and powers but come together as a team. One of my favorite superheroes is Black Widow or Wanda [Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch]. Marvel movies are always my comfort movies to watch. It makes me feel happy.”

As far as music goes, Diana and her cousins have been One Direction fans throughout their childhoods, growing up dancing and singing along to their songs. It really brought the family together.

“With One Direction, ever since they became One Direction, I’ve been a fan. Not only are they talented at singing they as well are funny, kind, and attractive. They bring me so much happiness and comfort. They may not know me, but I have built a special connection with each member. I love those five men so much because they always know how to make me smile.”

While being unique is important in the way Diana Fernandez presents herself, it is crystal clear what she loves the most is being part of a team that embraces the quirks and charms of each individual. Whether it be the giant ensembles of the Harry Potter or Marvel Comics universes, or the dance pop of groups like One Direction, Diana Fernandez enjoys the embrace of family and connection. As part of this year’s prom court, she gets to be part of something bigger than herself, even as she still gets to shine.
