Halloween Countdown – 31 Scary Moments – Oct. 7

The spirit of Halloween brings some candy to the local hermit

October officially marks the beginning of Scary Season. With this in mind, the Pepper Bough is celebrating with a daily dose of creepy moments sure to make your hairs stand on end. Come celebrate with us . . . if you dare.

Freddy? Jason? Michael? Leatherface? Posers.

You know who’s really scary? Sam in 2007’s “Trick ‘r Treat.” This pumpkin-headed little guy who skulks about in an orange burlap sack, carrying a serrated lollipop represents the true spirit of Halloween better than any of those other horror movie icons.

“Trick ‘r Treat” is an anthology film, interweaving five stories set on a particularly haunting Halloween night. In one story, a married couple get a taste of Sam’s anger when they blow out a pumpkin early. The others include a high school principal with a very grotesque hobby, a group of teens playing a prank that goes too far, and one in which a virginal college girl meets the right guy.

None of these stories are as strong, or as scary as the one about lonely, cantankerous hermit, Mr. Kreeg, who is visited by little Sam and gets far more than he bargained for from the impish scarecrow.
