"Candyman" proposes that Helen "Be my victim."

October officially marks the beginning of Scary Season. With this in mind, the Pepper Bough is celebrating with a daily dose of creepy moments sure to make your hairs stand on end. Come celebrate with us . . . if you dare.

In 1992’s “Candyman,” Tony Todd stars as the sinister, yet tragic, villain. Todd’s performance is as heartbreaking as it is horrifying.

The film was based on a short story by English horror writer Clive Barker called “The Forbidden.” In the film, the setting is moved from the ghettos of London to the Cabrini-Green projects in Chicago. This is used to highlight the horrors of urbanization as contrasted against Candyman’s origin story as a slave who is tortured to death upon falling in love with a white woman.

Both Candyman himself and the Cabrini-Green projects are a source of myth and modern legend in “Candyman,” leading to these ghastly words spoken by the villain himself:

“Do you believe in me? I am the writing on the wall, the whispering in the classroom! Without these things, I am nothing. So now, I must shed the innocent blood. Come with me.”
