New CA bill may lead to later start times at schools

Everyone loves late starts. Besides friday, it has to be the most anticipated day by students. With good reason too. It’s been proven that later starts result in better grades, less tardiness, and better attendance. Knowing this you’re probably wondering, “Why don’t we have a later start time.”

Well here’s some good news friend. California senator Anthony Portantino has introduced a bill Monday that would prohibit middle and high schools from starting classes before 8:30 a.m. That’s a full hour difference than what we have now. Stating “The science and research are clear: Our kids will do better if we start the school day later.” And truer words couldn’t have been spoken. As stated before, there’s lots of benefits to come with this. Though with ups,  there are always downs.

Parents are concerned about the later start. It could cause problems with some schedules parents already have. Preferring the earlier start so they can drop their kids off before or on their way to work. That’s why there’s no implementation date. For schools, students, and parents to get use to the new rule.

Though taking it all in, the benefits outweigh some schedule disruptions. This could be the start of something fresh, something much needed. There’s no doubt that there will be a collective sigh of relief from all California students if this bill passes. Let’s keep those fingers crossed!
