Brianna Jimenez came in 4th in her race at Andulka Park in Riverside.
Riverside, CA–Yesterday, the Cross Country team traveled to Andulka Park near the University of California, Riverside, to race in their second San Andreas League meet of the season. Originally scheduled for Wednesday, September 28, the race was moved up a day due to scheduling conflicts with park coordinators.
The change in date also came with another big change. Due to another swell in temperature, junior varsity and varsity races were combined in order to reduce the number of heats from four to two.
This had no effect on Colton’s runners. In the girls’ race, which doubled in size to 60 runners , sophomore Brianna Jimenez came in 4th place with a time of 22:00. Right on her heels was senior Diana Vera, who came in at 22:29, placing 6th overall.
Coach Roxana Lopez is excited by the progress being made by her team, especially the girls. “We now have two girls in the top 10, which has been unheard of for Colton in the past few years.”
For the boys, Christopher Acero continued to be Colton’s strongest runner, flying to an 11th place finish out of 93 runners with a time of 18:47. Senior Daniel Montes came in 48th, running the course in 22:23.
Other notable runners who set personal bests for the season were: Denise Moncada, with a time of 25:30.7; Sebastian Tabares, with a time of 23:19.6; and Anthony Davalos, with a time of 24:13.0.
In team tallies, teams are awarded points based upon the finish of their top runners, with the lowest score representing the best overall finishes for a team. Colton’s varsity girls tied for 2nd place with Grand Terrace at 65 points each, with Rialto High placing 1st overall with a score of 40. Eisenhower placed 4th with 81 points, and Jurupa Hills placed 5th with 91 points.
“Our varsity girls outperformed the GT girls for second place, which now puts us in second for the league,” Coach Lopez said.
The boys were not as successful as a team, placing 7th overall, scoring 181 points. Eisenhower took first place with 28 points, and Rialto finished 2nd with 57.
The future looks great for the Yellowjackets at this point in the season. Coach Lopez added, “I’m so proud of how far our team has come, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
