Senior Emma Arroyo races to the ball against Palm Springs in their first round CIF playoff matchup.

Palm Springs, CA—With two first half goals and a stingy defense, the Palm Springs Indians dashed the Lady Yellowjackets’ CIF title bid, shutting them down 2-0 in the first round of the playoffs.

Despite the final score, goalkeeper Zamantha Moctezuma had 8 saves, and forward Anna Bailey broke through into Palm Spring territory for a couple close call attacks. However, Palm Springs’ defense denied the Yellowjackets a single shot in the first half, and held them to three in the second.

The Yellowjackets were without junior Samara Barbosa, who was ruled out earlier in the day due to injury, and her absence in the midfield was felt.

Palm Springs scored their first goal at the 9-minute mark of the first half on a free kick, and their second at the 24th minute off a header.

Colton came out aggressive in the second half, putting together a tough challenge during the first 15 minutes. They had five attacks on the goal, including an exciting one-on-one between Bailey and the Palm Springs goalkeeper that was spoiled when the Palm Springs defense caught up.

The defeat puts an end to a fantastic season for the Lady Yellowjackets, who end the season with a record of 11-6-3, their best record since the 2018-2019 season.

“Regardless of the outcome, I am so proud of these girls,” coach Manny Flores said before the game.
