Colton took on Fontana High School for the Skyline League championship Friday night. Madison Barrera led CHS with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Fontana, CA—The last time the Lady Yellowjackets basketball team faced Fontana on January 11, they only scored 9 points. Last night, with their full team, and new addition Savannah Govea, the Yellowjackets more than tripled their offensive output, putting up 39 on the Skyline League leaders.

Unfortunately, Fontana dropped 60.

The final score was by no means a true indication of the game play. Colton made Fontana earn every one of its points, fighting and scrapping for rebounds and loose balls. Madison Barrera saved her best all-around game of the season for the championship. She played all but 30 seconds of the game, and finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocked shots.

Savannah Govea scored 11 points on 4-5 from the field, including 3 three pointers. She was also a pest on the defensive end, swiping 4 steals. Fontana struggled to keep up with her during the game.

For Fontana, they were led by freshman forward Destiny Rentie, who put in 16 points, and sophomore guard Akami Garrett, who added 14 points. The Yellowjackets defense had difficulty keeping them out of the key and off the free throw line.

The first quarter was a tight back-and-forth battle. Colton went on a 3-0 run to end the quarter down 18-15. Then, Fontana asserted itself in the second, expanding their lead to 36-22 at halftime.

The second half saw both teams taking shots at each other, going back-and-forth, but with the large halftime lead, Colton had too big a hill to climb.

This Skyline league season ends with Colton’s best showing since 2009, placing 2nd overall and clinching a berth in the CIF sectional playoffs. Playoff scheduling will be announced Tuesday of next week, with game times and locations to be determined.
