The championship match between Colton and San Gorgonio was a hard fought, tightly contested game. San G won, 1-0 in overtime.

San Bernardino, CA—It was a heartbreaker. A controversial foul call during the third minute of overtime in a 0-0 tied game led to a free kick by San Gorgonio resulting in an errant bounce that gave the Spartans the 2021-22 San Andreas League title.

Suffice to say, the Lady Yellowjackets were distraught.

This match was primed to be a memorable battle from the kickoff. San Gorgonio came into the game with a 4-1-1 conference record, with Colton right at their heels with a 3-1-2 record. However, Colton was responsible for the Spartans’ only loss and tie.

The match itself did not disappoint. Colton’s defense withstood multiple San Gorgonio charges into their zone, with senior Aracely Reyes holding down the midfield and juniors Desiree Orozco and Samara Barbosa getting timely blocks and staving off the Spartan attack. Senior Emma Arroyo also proved to be a tough matchup for San Gorgonio as her quickness kept beating the Spartans to loose balls.

In goal, Zamantha Moctezuma played her best game of the season, notching 9 saves and giving fits to San Gorgonio, who took 17 shots on goal in total.

On offense, the Yellowjackets put extra pressure on the Spartans in the second half. Anna Bailey and Diana Fernandez fought for every bit of extra space, and came close to scoring on three late game attempts.

By placing second in San Andreas league after the title match, the Yellowjackets go into CIF sectional playoffs as the number two seed. The schedule for the playoffs is still to be determined.
